Relaxer during pregnancy

New to this group so this may have been addressed in the past. Does anyone know if getting relaxers is safe during pregnancy? I'm currently 4w+4d. I've had a mc a few months ago and don't want to do anything to jeopardize this pregnancy. Please no relaxer vs natural comments. I just want to know if it's safe or KNOWN to cause issues.

From what I've heard it is unsafe. Any chemical treatments are unsafe during pregnancy, especially during your first trimester which is the most fragile trimester of all. You definitely don't wanna expose him/her to any harsh chemicals like that during such a vital developmental phase. I wouldn't risk it.

@atlshan88,

Thanks for your reply. I assumed so, but I have an interview coming up and of course wanted to get my hair done. Haven't relaxed my hair in months so I have a A LOT of new growth. Guess I'll have to figure something else out.

@ladiired8,

What about getting a silk press? I'm also in need of a relaxer but I've found that silk presses get my hair just as straight

@ladiired8,

Ever done a silk press? I'm completely natural and it gets my hair silky straight with volume. Not sure how long your hair is, but this may be a quick fix since you have an upcoming interview

I relaxed my hair when I was around 4 weeks like you are now.. my scalp didn't do too well.. I needed to wash it out before I even got to do half of my head. Once I was in my second trimester I tried again and it went fine.. I wouldn't risk it in the first trimester to be honest. But I'm 25 weeks pregnant and I have a healthy baby.. hope that answers your question.

@Bee3975C,

Thanks for your comment

I've had relaxers while pregnant BUT always waited until the 2nd trimester!!!

I wouldn't risk it in the first trimester...but I did relax my hair in my second trimester around 20 weeks...I'm now 29 weeks and baby is perfectly fine

Thanks everyone for the replies and suggestions. I just ended up having my sister rod my hair and it came out cute lol. I think I'll just lay off of the relaxers during this pregnancy.

@ladiired8,

I relaxed my hair with my first and again with this one. I just try to space them out. No less than 13 weeks.

@ladiired8,

I'm 14wks and have not had a relaxer since week 5 before I found out. I'm planning to do protective styles to get me through without a relaxer. I hope my hair survives

I haven't had a relaxer in fifteen years (I have a very sensitive scalp and decided not to put myself thru the torture). I have a lot of hair and it's thick. I get a blow dry and curl. If you start on this routine your hair gets used to it. In fact, my hair doesn't even frizz when it's humid.

But what I really wanted to say is there is no way I'd get a relaxer while pregnant. One, who knows about the chemicals and affect to the fetus and two, with all of the hormonal changes in your body who knows what will happen to your hair! My 2 cents.

My doctor told me not to relax because of how strong the chemicals are.

I had a relaxer while pregnant but I waited until the third trimester so my hair looked amazing while in labor/delivering and I noticed a big difference in growth waiting months to get a relaxer.

I'm pregnant with my fourth child and had a relaxer with pregnant with all of them. My children are healthy and so is my hair

A relaxer has always been unsafe, many toxic chemicals
